Make a Wish!

Hello everyone and welcome to my shiny, new blog! For my inaugural post, I thought I would start us off with something special: a painting and a wish.

Wisher, 2020

Oil paint on canvas

5" x 7"

This piece, entitled Wisher, is a tiny painting; it measures only 5”x7”. Typically I like to work very large but recently I was gifted a pack of mini canvases. They were just too cute not to use!

When I was a little girl, my mother told me that dandelions that had gone to seed were in fact “wishers.” One simply had to make a wish (with eyes closed of course) and blow away the fluffy tufts to activate their mystical properties. The scattered seeds would then carry your wishes with them on the wind.

It’s funny how certain things lose their mystique and whimsy when we grow up. Wishers become weeds and result in yard work, not wishes. But as I was sitting on the front porch admiring our overgrown “prairie lawn,” I rediscovered the beauty of dandelions. The bright midday sun shone through their gossamer tops making them seem almost luminous, accentuated by the vibrant green grasses all round them.

I chose oil paint as my medium to capture this moment. Oils produces such a rich depth of color and allow for a certain softness in blending. I felt these qualities would best express the feathery seed tops and do justice to the vibrant greens.

My wish, for all of us, is that our eyes would be opened to the beauty that is all round us. Let’s take back wishers and choose to see the world with hopeful eyes.

Thank you for stopping by and celebrating my new blog with me!

  3. Angela, your painting reminded me of my childhood when I would hold a dandelion by its stem, make a wish, and blow the seeds into the air believing my wish would come true. Thank you for sharing! Miss you!
